Septic System Problems in Miami

Over 1.5 million properties (about 1/3) in Florida treat wastewater with a septic system. With the large number of septic systems in Florida, there are 100’s if not 1000’s of septic system issues developing every month in Miami alone.

Why Septic System Problems Are The Worst

If you haven’t had to deal with a septic system issue before, you better go knock on some wood because they’re an expensive problem to fix.

Before You Get End Up In A Messy Situation

Knowing the ins and outs of your septic isn’t the prettiest information to know, but the knowledge is invaluable. If you don’t have a copy of the blueprint/layout of your septic system, get in touch with your council immediately.

Once you have a copy in front of you, spend some time getting to know it. Just like you want to know what to do in an emergency, knowing how your septic system works can save you time and money in the long run.

Bonus points: is your septic tank a standard tank and drain, cesspit or something else?

Septic Systems 101: How They Work

Septic tanks work with bacteria and chemicals that are in balance to help break down regular waste materials. If the chemical balance is thrown out of sink (pun intended), problems start to arise.

5 Common Causes Of Septic System Problems

  • Not having the tank pumped regularly. The ‘norm’ can be anywhere from 1 – 3 years depending on level of usage
  • Household cleaning products such as bleach are full of chemicals, avoid putting cleaning liquids directly into drains
  • Eat a lot of greasy food? Grease solidifies and when it becomes a solid in your septic system, blockages can occur
  • Products that can’t be broken down going down the drain. Cat litter, cigarettes, plastic and napkins may appear to be suitable for the garbage grinder but they aren’t! Mix them with grease and it’s a blockage disaster waiting to happen
  • Planting trees. Seems harmless and you should plant more trees! Make sure they’re not close to the drains, otherwise the drain field will be at risk of frequent clogging

If you are in Miami, there’s a good chance you’ll be aware of some of this information already. When a problem comes about though, knowing what you may have done incorrectly is paramount to solving the solution quickly and preventing future issues.
